Variegated Porcelain Berry
Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' is a vigorous climbing vine, grown for its large, beautifully variegated leaves, and its ornamental berries.
From summer, small clusters of green-white flowers are produced, later yielding an autumn display of gorgeous speckled berries that are coloured in pastel pinks and purples, ripening to blue. Sadly inedible, but very pretty. Best fruiting occurs in full sun.
Its leaves are generally 3-lobed, similar to grape vines, and heavily variegated with white. Young leaves are often pink-tinged in spring.
A great plant for covering shaded or sunny structures like fences, arbours, walls, and trellises. Can also be grown without any support, spreading along the ground to cloak things like rocky patches or tree stumps.
Full sun to part shade. Climbs via tendrils to 4-6 m high, 2-5 m wide. Prefers well drained soil.
