Deutzia x hybrida 'Magicien'

Deutzia × hybrida 'Magicien' – Deutzia

'Magicien' is a sensational, showy shrub that covers itself in sprays of starry flowers, each around 2.5 cm across, through late spring and early summer. The petals are lilac-pink with a clean white edge and open from deeper pink buds, so a shrub in full flower carries several tones at once.

A deciduous shrub growing to about 1.5 m high and 1 m wide, it is frost hardy and grows in most well-drained soils, from sand to clay. Plant in full sun for the heaviest flowering; it also takes part shade. Flowers form on the previous season's wood, so prune straight after flowering, taking a few of the oldest flowered stems back to the base to keep the shrub open and productive. It suits a mixed shrub border, an informal hedge or a cottage garden planting.

Raised by the Lemoine nursery in Nancy, France, as one of a group of Deutzia × hybrida cultivars released between 1925 and 1936.
