Disporopsis arisanensis – Evergreen Solomon’s Seal
Disporopsis arisanensis is a beautiful shade loving woodland species that is native to Taiwan. This plant is related to Polygonatum (Solomon’s Seal) and the family resemblance shows, looking like a smaller, evergreen version. The genus has only recently made its way into horticulture, so plants can be rare.
This is a slowly spreading perennial plant that can reach up to 30 cm in height. In spring, the plant produces arching stems of small, creamy white, bell-shaped flowers. These flowers have an almost black interior, and are followed by small purple/black berries.
The foliage is evergreen, with glossy, dark green leaves. Over time, a colony of this glossy green plant will form, spreading slowly via underground rhizomes.
Disporopsis arisanensis is ideal for growing in a shaded area, such as a woodland garden, under the canopy of taller trees, or under shrubs. It prefers a cool, moist location and is frost hardy.
This plant is also resistant to kangaroos and deer, not usually eaten by them, which makes it a good option for gardens in areas where populations are high.
Disporopsis arisanensis is a great choice for any garden looking to add beauty and interest to shaded areas.
