Paeonia lactiflora 'Green Lotus' – Herbaceous Peony
'Green Lotus' is unique and most intriguing peony variety, sporting the most unusual style of bloom — a single to semi-double form with frilly, irregular petals quite unlike a conventional peony. Each bloom opens pale cream to lime-green, streaked with chartreuse and develops a ruby-peach flush with age, set around a centre of golden stamens. Lightly fragrant, the flowers last an exceptionally long time — among the first to appear and the last to finish.
It is vigorous, floriferous and notably heat-tolerant, carrying its blooms on relatively short, sturdy stems that rarely need staking. Suits borders, the front of a bed, and large pots. The glossy deep green foliage stays handsome right through summer before dying back in autumn. The flowers cut and last well in the vase, and, like all peonies, it wants a sunny, free-draining spot and a cold winter to flower at its best.
Registered in 1995 — raised by William Krekler and introduced by Roy G. Klehm of Klehm's Song Sparrow nursery in Wisconsin.
A peony for collectors, and for anyone after a peony bloom that looks like nothing else in the border.
