Malus x domestica 'Mattom' Tom Matthews™ – Crab Apple
Malus Tom Matthews™ is a compact and very showy crab apple cultivar, featuring a colourful display throughout much of the year. Winter dormancy is broken in spring by the emergence of bronze-red foliage and brilliant masses of scarlet red flowers. The flowers are followed by an abundance of small, dark, red-purple fruits, held in medium-sized clusters from autumn until deep into winter.
Flowering and colouration are best in full sun, but Tom Matthews™ is also quite happy with part sun.
Foliage is mid- to dark-green and tinged with bronze, particularly on the new growth. Bark is greyish-brown.
Growth rate is moderate, with an upright and rounded habit. Young trees may benefit from some formative pruning.
