'Dinner Plate' is a stunningly showy herbaceous peony with the most immense, dinner plate-sized blooms. The flowers unfurl to reveal a glorious mid-pink hue, reaching a width of 17-25 cm. Each bloom opens into a stunning double rose-like form, with a light, pleasing fragrance.

The buds are also huge, and encased in fresh, light green bracts, which adds to the allure. Each stem carries one main bud and up to three side buds to extend blooming period.

'Dinner Plate' is a robust and floriferous grower with sturdy stems, but it's worth noting that the extra-large and heavy flowers may require additional support, particularly in wet conditions.

Blooming later in the season, 'Dinner Plate' is the final pink peony to flower in our selection. The wait is unquestionably worthwhile though, as once the flowers unfurl they provide a captivating display.

Even though this variety was introduced in the late '60s, it's a relatively recent introduction to the Australian market. Its popularity has been steadily growing globally among gardeners and florists alike. With its large size and sturdy stems, 'Dinner Plate' is undoubtedly a rising star in the cut flower industry.

Breeding and Awards

'Dinner Plate' is the creation of American peony breeder Carl G. Klehm, and a cross between 'Charlie’s White' and an unnamed seedling. It first flowered in 1951 and was introduced in 1968. It was lauded as the Grand Champion (Best in Show) at the 1973 Milwaukee National Exhibition, sponsored by the American Peony Society.
