Paeonia lactiflora x peregrina 'Flame'   –   Herbaceous Peony

The large, rounded buds of 'Flame' open to single blooms resembling a large saucer in a beautiful shade of coral red that ages to pink. This shorter growing variety blooms early in the season on strong stems, reaching a height of 80 cm. The blooms create an effect reminiscent of a flame, hence the name.

'Flame' is the creation of Lyman D. Glasscock (1875-1972) of Elmwood, Illinois, USA. It resulted from a cross between P. lactiflora 'Pallas' and P. peregrina 'Sunbeam' and was released in 1939. Lyman also introduced 46 other peony varieties, including the outstanding and very well-known 'Red Charm', 'Mother's Choice', and 'Eventide', all of which are highly regarded for both garden and cut flower use.
