Paeonia lactiflora ‘Gay Paree’   –   Herbaceous Peony

'Gay Paree' stands out as a truly distinctive and exceptional anemone-style herbaceous peony. Each bloom presents a breathtaking contrast of pink and white that is irresistibly cheery.

The rich cerise pink guard petals gracefully encircle a large anemone centre of creamy white petalodes that can sometimes be shaded pink. The combination of these contrasting colours renders 'Gay Paree' a wonderful spectacle.

'Gay Paree' makes an excellent cut flower, with tall and sturdy stems. In the garden these stems also help make it a standout variety, proudly holding the blooms high above the light green foliage without any need for support. As a bonus, side buds are also present and extend the blooming period.

This vigorous variety provides a stunning and eye-catching contrast in the garden and is a must-have for any collection.

About the Breeder

Edward Auten Jr. (1881 - 1974) of Princeville, Illinois, USA bred this 1933 peony variety.

Auten graduated from Harvard University in 1904 and worked in the banking industry. He planted his first peonies in 1910 and began experimenting with seedlings in 1916. The peonies he bred received numerous accolades, including an Honorable Mention from the American Peony Society, recognition from the Midwest Peony and Iris Society, and a special prize from Brand Peony Farms for a seedling of the Japanese type.

Auten was also a member of the American Peony Society's special committee dedicated to investigating Japanese and single types.
