Herbaceous Peony 'Mackinac Grand'
One of the best red peony varieties is the ‘Mackinac Grand’ peony named after the
Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan after the breeder of this peony was said
to be short of money settling his bill and offered to name one of his peonies after the
hotel and provide them with plants. This variety sure is remarkable with the most
stand out radiant clear red with brilliance and clarity to the colour and stands out in
the garden with it’s most sought after semi double radiant red blooms with ruffled
golden stamens in the centre held on strong upright stems with lush foliage. There is
only one flower per stem and they are lightly fragrant which is an added charm to the
variety.
Mackinac Grand peony was bred by David Reath from Vulcan, Michigan and was
registered in 1992 and blooms early to mid season.
Ideal as a cut flower variety and is highly sought after.
