Herbaceous Peony 'Pink Vanguard'

The soft pink blooms of 'Pink Vanguard' are sure to please any gardener or cut-flower grower. Tall stems grow to around 95cm, each carrying a large central bud alongside many side buds. The flowers open a loose, milky pink with several layers of petals that lighten as they age. As the side buds open in succession, they extend the flowering season.

Pink Vanguard is best given about three years to establish before it truly shines. The early blooms of its first few years are lovely, but tend to carry fewer petals than a mature plant will produce.

The blooms open to about 20cm across, early to mid-season, and the plant is an excellent seed and pollen parent for hybridising. It was bred by William Seidl and Don Hollingsworth, using a Saunders variety as the pod parent, and released in 2005. Seidl, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is also the breeder behind the famed 'Pastelegance'.
