Paeonia lactiflora 'White Cap'

A striking Japanese-form flower with deep red-pink guard petals surrounding a contrasting centre of cream and light pink petalodes. The blooms are fragrant and freely produced, carrying plenty of side buds on tall stems.

This mid-season variety was bred by George E. Winchell (1885–1960), a lesser-known peony breeder from Oskaloosa, Iowa. He registered eight varieties from 1941, with 'White Cap' his last, registered in 1956. It went on to win the American Peony Society's Gold Medal in 1991.
