Paeonia lactiflora 'Yang Fei Chu Yu'Â -Â Herbaceous Peony
'Yang Fei Chu Yu' (æ¨å¦ƒå‡ºæµ´) is a tall variety of herbaceous peony with stunning, large double blooms. The elegant white flowers have a light peach blush and grow up to 17 cm wide by 8 cm high. Strong, thick stems hold the blooms high above the foliage, reaching up to 1.1 metres in height. Flowers very late in the season, with few side buds. The moderately fragrant blooms are ideal for cut flower arrangements and have a long vase life.
The name can be translated as follows: Yang Fei (æ¨å¦ƒ) translates to Consort Yang, who was a high ranking concubine during the Tang Dynasty. Chu Yu (出浴) translates to coming out of the bath or pool.
Yang Fei was a renowned consort, today known as one of the four great beauties of ancient China. She also had a deep affinity for peonies, considering them her favourite flower. That her name is associated with this peony shows just how highly regarded its beauty is within China.
