Paeonia × 'RTPIV791-38' Caroline Constabel – Itoh Peony

'Caroline Constabel' is an early-flowering Itoh (intersectional) peony carrying large, cupped, double blooms in salmon-pink to rose, each marked with darker central flares and a mild fragrance. Three to five flowers open on every stem, and an established clump can carry fifty or more across the season.

Sturdy, upright stems hold the heavy blooms above a vigorous, bushy plant without staking, framed by lush dark green foliage that emerges red-tinged and stays clean well into autumn. It reaches around 70 cm, takes full sun to part shade in free-draining soil, and rewards a cold winter with a stronger display each year. The long-lasting flowers cut well for the vase.

Bred by Thierry Rat of Moissac, France (who is also behind 'Oochigeas' and 'Belle Toulousaine') and registered in 2006. It is named in honour of Caroline Constabel, the researcher behind the micropropagation program at Planteck, the Canadian tissue-culture firm that patented the variety.

A hardy, free-flowering Itoh that pairs tree-peony drama with herbaceous-peony ease.
