Rosa James Galway (Auscrystal)
A David Austin English climbing rose with vigorous, upright growth that will cover a wall, fence or pillar in good time. The flowers are warm mid-pink at the centre, graduating to a paler pink at the edges, with numerous neatly placed petals forming a slightly domed, layered shape. Each bloom is about 8 cm across, fully double with well over 100 petals, and they repeat reliably from late spring through to the first frosts.
The fragrance is light to moderate with an old rose character. Growth is strong, slightly arching and almost thornless, which makes it one of the easier climbers to train and work around. As a shrub it can reach about 1.5 m, but given a wall or support it will extend to 3–3.5 m. The foliage is mid-green, healthy and disease resistant.
Named after the internationally acclaimed Irish flautist to celebrate his 60th birthday. James Galway works well on a house wall, over an arch, along a fence, or grown as a large freestanding shrub at the back of a border. The nearly thornless stems also make it a particularly good cut flower.
