Additional Information

Luma apiculata   –   Chilean Myrtle

This evergreen shrub or small tree has deep glossy dark green leaves that release a spicy fragrance when crushed. When kept trimmed it makes an excellent hedge, and responds well to regular clipping to maintain a dense, formal or informal screen. For specimen planting, the lower branches can be pruned away to expose the striking ornamental bark to full effect.

Blooms with a profusion of small white flowers from mid-summer to mid-autumn. These develop into small black berries that are edible and can be made into jam. As it matures, the smooth cinnamon bark exfoliates to reveal a creamy interior, providing rich visual interest.

Luma apiculata thrives in fair to well-drained soil and tolerates coastal conditions once established.

The combination of evergreen foliage, long-flowering display, and attractive multi-season bark makes this Chilean native valuable for mixed plantings and specimen positions.
