Directions For Use

1. Place a small soil sample on the white mixing plate and add a few drops of the indicator dye.
2. Mix the dye through the soil to make a thick paste.
3. Puff the white barium powder over the surface of the moist paste.
4. Wait for the powder to change colour, then match it against the colour chart to read the pH.

Test several spots around the garden rather than one, as pH can vary across a single bed.

Why it matters

Soil pH governs which nutrients a plant can take up, and with hydrangeas it also sets flower colour. Acid soil gives blue flowers, near neutral to alkaline gives pink. Test before you start adjusting with lime or a blueing or pinking fertiliser, then again as the season goes on.
