Nemesia Plums and Custard – Aroma Series

Plums and Custard is named accurately: deep plum-purple upper petals over a broad golden yellow throat, in flowers small enough that the colour break reads as pattern rather than as two blocks. It flowers heavily and continuously from late spring into autumn, and like the rest of the modern nemesias it is strongly scented at close range.

Grow it in full sun or with light afternoon shade, which extends the flowering in hot spells, and give it free-draining soil that does not dry out completely. Shear it back by a third when the first flush finishes to trigger the next. At 25 to 30 cm it suits the front of a border, but it is at its best spilling slightly over the edge of a pot or hanging basket where the scent is at nose height.
