Polygonatum × hybridum – Solomon's Seal
A herbaceous perennial producing graceful, arching stems clothed with paired oval leaves, and soft white bell-shaped flowers with green tips that dangle beneath the foliage in late spring and early summer. The flowers are followed by dark berries. This hybrid is the most widely cultivated Solomon's Seal in gardens, valued for its elegant form and subtle fragrance.
Hybrid vigour makes it more robust and floriferous than its parent species. It thrives in shade and woodland settings, tolerating heavy shade to part sun. The spreading rhizomes underground create attractive drifts over time, making it ideal for naturalising under trees or in shaded border plantings. It prefers rich, organic soil and consistent moisture.
A must-have shade-lover for the woodland garden and shaded borders.
